When I had my hair cut into a bob, I cut the dolls hair the same. (hehe, I am actually a hairdresser today) It's funny how exciting is to receive a doll with the same name. I plan on changing the Mae dolls I make to Anika and Addison so my girls get the same feeling.. :)

  28. I'd have to say the basketball hoop and backboard my parents got for me and my sister. I got the backboard and my sister got the hoop, net, and bolts and nuts. When she opened the bolts and must we all laughed and she said, 'Oh boy! It was like jumping back in time and remembering all those dentist appointments, road trips and late nights playing with him. I hope my kids have something special to remember like that.

    ReplyDelete
  32. My orange and yellow barbie dream house. When my oldest (7) was still a baby I found the house in the same colors and had to pick it up...she loves it and I home my youngest will enjoy it also!

  33. I remember 2 gifts for very different reasons!!

    1) A pair of pale blue baby doll pyjamas ... they were the weirdest cut, with bias binding around the sleeves and leg holes (not elastic), which meant I couldn't get them on, and they were never worn. I wonder what kind of kids they used as a model for those!!??!!

    2) Fashion plates! I was 12, and I used them for title pages in all my school exercise books, and kept the entire kit in perfect order. My girls like playing with them now :D

    ReplyDelete
  38. I particularly remember getting a "Sweet Secret", I think they were called. They looked like a gemmed lockette, but they had an animal (mine was a kitten) folded up inside, so when you unfolded the head, arms and legs, the lockette became the body. I got it from Santa when he came to my Primary School the Christmas before I started grade prep (first year). It was all a bit magical. :-) I still have it and now my 4 little girls love playing with it.

It is hard to pick a favorite, but one that stands out as so special and amazing - a dear family friend made me hand-made Barbie ball gowns I don't know if I still have it, but my favorite was a peacy/orange gown with a floral gauze overlay - wish I had one now in my size! Thanks for encouraging us to think about our Christmas memories!! I love this mermae doll - she is my favorite mermaid I have seen!!

  50. I remember my Cabbage Patch doll the most - especially my aunt's story about how she had to fight two other ladies for it! The other memorable gift was this fancy pair of leather shoes that I picked out before Christmast. It was the first time my mom did that and it made me feel so grown up :)

  51. That would definitely be my schnauzer puppy "Kissy" when I was around 10 or 11. My parents planned it out pretty well...we went to look at puppies and give our input before Christmas, but my parents told us we "couldn't afford it after all" and we went home sad. On Christmas Eve we came home from visiting relatives and heard a scratching, whimpering noise...and guess what surprise we found under the tree!? I believed in Santa again that year, there was no way my parents put that puppy there! ;)

    ReplyDelete
  61. This one is a little different - one year my brother gave me his jacket as a gift. My brother is much older than me and I always looked up to him. He had this leather jacket that he had found and had sewn all kinds of things all over it. It was very unique and it was his favorite, so it meant so much to me to get that jacket as a gift. Funny, b/c he didn't even wrap it - he just handed it over and said "Merry Christmas, sis!" LOL!

    ReplyDelete
  62. When I was about 8 I wanted a Cabbage Patch Kid. My father was out of work and my parents couldn't afford one, so my mom (being an amazing seamstress) made me a doll complete with clothing, shoes, pajamas, slippers, tote bag, coats, hats, a muff, and even a teddy bear. She was so excited for me to open it, but I was (at the time) disappointed that she wasn't a Cabbage Patch Kid. Over the years though my feelings have changed, and that doll is now my most treasured possession. She is currently tucked away waiting for my daughter to be old enough to play with!

  63. Cabbage patch dolls were definitely a hot ticket item!! I remember my mom telling me women were fighting in the aisles to get one. She managed to get one for me that year!! After having two adorable little boys (Peyton 4 Caleb 14 months) we are being blessed with a little girl!! I am due right after Xmas! We are so very excited!!! And I am going so crazy over all this girly stuff!!

Asian Cabbage Patch doll. She was so pretty. She had red silk clothing and black flip flop style shoes. I remember wanting her for all year and close to Christmas she was gone from the store. As an adult, I love the good books my husband surprises me with, and I adore watching my 2 year old open and get excited by her presents - whatever they are. Her favorite to date would probably be a set of colorful giant foam shapes that she can roll on, stand on, stack, or crawl over. As she was born near Christmas, she was probably my best gift ever!

    ReplyDelete
  78. My favorite gift at Christmas was my cabbage patch doll. I remember my mom and aunt trying so hard to get ahold of one in '84, I still have her and she smells so good, like baby powder :)

    ReplyDelete
  79. The year of the cabbage patch craze (mom's punching each other in the store, etc) my mom wasn't going to deal with all that madness so she found a woman at a craft fair who made homemade cabbage patch dolls. She got my sister and I one each. We also were allowed to pick out some homemade clothes for them. I chose the lush fur coat. :) Unknown to me, my sister saved them and gifted them to my daughter on her 1st birthday.

  128. A stuffed raccoon puppet that I had coveted for months at a local shop! It's the only time I ever snooped for gifts in my mom's closet because I just had to know if I was getting him for Christmas. My son and daughter love playing with him now over 20 years later!

  130. When cabbage patch dolls were all the rage, I wanted one so bad, but we couldn't afford them. So for Christmas my Mom made me and my sister a homemade cabbage patch. They were amazing!!! So much better then the store bought dolls. I will never forget those dolls.

  132. It would have to be the Cabbage Patch doll I got when I was 3. I don't actually remember getting it, but my mom loves to tell me the story. They had just come out and apparently I didn't want one until right before Christmas. They were no where to be found but my mom ended up buying one off of some lady. I still have her, too. :)
