Meet Cain the "Elf"! Since Christmas 2008, my Nutmeg Gnome pattern has been made into a lot of gnomes and a ton of Christmas elves! Cain is made from sparkly ornament fabric and is decked out with red jingle bells on his toes and on the tippy top of his hat! He has a removable scarf to keep extra warm.

Oh gosh he is way too cute for words!!!! Hmmm favourite holiday dessert is going to be tough to narrow down. Our family has a tradition of making lots of slices at this time of year. If I have to choose just one I'd say my own Rocky Road.

My all time favorite dessert, especially around the holidays, is Lefse. It is a Norwegian potato bread, and you generally put butter and sugar on it. I chose this as my favorite, not just because it is super yummy, but because it is a treat that my Grandma (who passed away many years ago) used to send to me as a Christmas gift (when you have 20 grandchildren, buying gifts could get a little expensive). Grandma knew it was my favorite, and since my parents and I lived 12 hours away from "home" and my mom didn't have the griddles needed to make it, she wanted to make sure that I didn't miss out. No store bought gift could ever take the place of Grandma's homemade goodies!
ReplyDeleteIt's a toss up between my hubby's family's molasses cookies or my aunt's russian tea cakes!
ReplyDeleteWow all these sound wonderful!!! I think my all time christmas eats would be my homemade caramels that melt in your mouth rolled in peanuts and dipped in chocolate oohh they are the best!! ReplyDeleteMy mom's peanut butter fudge with nuts! She doesn't make it much anymore but when she did I would eat a lot of it until I got a weak stomach lol
ReplyDeleteHe's too, too adorable Sarah!!!! I'm afraid I'm a little predictable, because my fave thing to bake for Christmas is gingerbread men!!! It took years to find a non-crumbling dough, and I make mini men as well as full-size for gifts and home-nibbling. :D
ReplyDeleteMy favorite Christmas goodies would have to be 'Mound Balls' from Taste of Home. Oh my these are to die for!! But then so are your cute little creations, and yours don't add any calories or fat to my body!!

We always have the good old traditional British Christmas pudding with brandy butter and cream in this house! Even better with some silver sixpences hidden in it. It may well be an acquired UK taste though :)

Gingerbread men!
ReplyDeleteWe have a difficult family to make treats for. My daughter Cami is Gluten and Lactose intolerant and my son Fynn is allergic to eggs so finding something I can make that everyone will like and looks like it's supposed to is near to impossible.
I found a recipe to make gingerbread men ( on pig in the kitchen's blog) and then decorated the ones for my son and me (I cant eat eggs while he's still nursing so I eat the same as him) with chocolate drops and with royal icing for everyone else.
We had a ton of fun reading the story and singing songs while colouring in gingerbread men printouts. The girls loved shouting out "Run, run as fast as you can! You can't catch me, I'm the GINGERBREAD MAN!!!"
What a beautiful doll! At this time of year I like to eat Turkish Delight
ReplyDeleteI thought I had posted but my comment isn't showing up! I can't eat most treats, but my kids' favorite is Fantasy Fudge - the stuff made with chocolate chips and a jar of marshmallow creme. :) They can skip everything else as long as we have that!

ReplyDeleteI have started making a rum cake in the last few years that is out of this world! It is basically a doctored up yellow cake that has a glaze made from rum and sugar. All the booze is cooked, it's the flavor and sugar that is so yummy! I also love cranberry and pistachio biscotti with white chocolate drizzle. mmmmmm...
ReplyDeleteNo Bake Cookies! They aren't strictly "holiday" but they are memories of making them at Christmas with my Grandma when I was a child. Now we make them for my family as part of their Christmas gifts. Yummy!!

ReplyDeleteBrickle!
ReplyDeleteIf I had to pick, which you are making me do. My favorite cookie or desserts, I would have to say are mini cheese cakes. It wasn't until I was married that she told me how much she hated making them, but she knew that they were my favorite, so made 'em anyway. I now make them every year. I'm so glad that I had Grandma write down the recipe for me before she went home to be with the Lord. It's sort of bitter sweet making them every year, but they are my favorite! :)

ReplyDeleteMy favorite has to bed my Nana's butter tarts. They are so heavenly delicious. I miss them, its been a few years since she's made them.

They are tricky and time consuming to make, but soooo worth it, not just for the taste, but for the warm memories that come in every bite!!
